Talent visas
We will find which country reads your record as evidence rather than as a biography, show what each accepts as proof, and say what the first renewal will demand of you.

When you need a talent visa

You have nobody to sponsor you
These routes exist precisely for that. The company that would normally file disappears from the arrangement, and what replaces it is an assessment of you.
Your record is stronger than your title
A job title travels badly across borders. A published figure, a verified degree, a documented recognition travels well, and these schemes read the second kind.
You want to leave the employer out
A permission with no company written on it survives a resignation, a pivot and a bad quarter. That, more than the length of the term, is what people come here for.
The evidence has no address yet
Every country names who may confirm what. A portfolio nobody official has looked at is still a portfolio, and a file without a named confirmer is not yet a case.
You are founding something
Founders sit in their own category almost everywhere, assessed on the venture instead of on a salary, and in one country on the jobs it creates.
What you get
- The country your record fits
- The right route inside it
- Evidence built to the criteria
- Family rights known upfront
- The renewal condition planned
What a talent visa requires

Every talent route makes the same trade. It removes the employer — the offer, the sponsor, the company on the document — and puts an assessor in that place. Everything that follows comes from that swap: the application is about you, the evidence has to be verifiable by somebody other than you, and the country decides how long it believes you for.
Where the route runs through a job instead, that is a work visa; the whole set is under Immigration & Visas, and picking between countries at all is jurisdiction selection.
Who assesses, and what they grant
| What is compared | Hong Kong | Saudi Arabia | United Arab Emirates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who decides | the immigration department | a dedicated residency centre | the federal identity authority |
| How the case is read | points, or a single income figure | a product chosen from seven | a category and its endorsement |
| Longest opening term | eight years | indefinite, by product | 10 years, renewable |
| Employer on the document | none | none | none |
Three ways to prove the same thing
The schemes agree that merit has to be demonstrable and disagree completely about how. One turns it into arithmetic: criteria, points, a threshold, and beside it a single income figure — HK$2.5 million a year — that needs no argument at all. One turns it into a product catalogue, with a statutory floor under every product — solvency, a clean record, a medical report no older than six months — and its own evidence on top. One turns it into an endorsement: a named category, and a named authority whose confirmation opens it. Preparing for one of the three is not preparation for the others.
The markets we file in
Hong Kong
The most mechanical of the three and the most predictable. Two schemes, both granting stay on time limitation alone, and an achievement branch that opens with eight years in one grant.
Saudi Arabia
The only one where the answer is a residence permit written into a law of its own, issued in seven products, with rights to property and commerce set out in the statute rather than in guidance.
United Arab Emirates
Ten years with automatic renewal and no sponsor, across categories that now reach innovators and inventors, culture and the arts, athletes and digital technology talent.
What the first renewal will ask
This is where these routes are actually decided, and it is the part people plan for last. A points-based permission wants evidence of having settled: steady paid work at a dependable wage, or a venture you run here. A pass granted on income wants the same at the end of its single non-repeating term. A founder's product counts jobs. A permit whose rights are written into statute asks that the conditions that opened it still hold. None of these can be assembled in the last month, which is why we write down the renewal condition before the first application is filed.

Stages of work
Your record read as evidence.
Last year's earnings, checked qualifications, patents, prizes, publications, appointments. We sort what you hold into what an assessor is able to confirm and what only you are able to assert.
The country and the route chosen together.
The same record scores differently in each scheme, and sometimes qualifies in one and not in the next. We put it against all of them before recommending where to file.
Evidence built to the criterion it answers.
Confirmation from whichever body that country names, in the shape it names, with tax and employment papers that agree with each other. A one-size dossier is the commonest way a strong record fails.
Family and timing decided in advance.
Who may come, on what terms, and how long the first permission actually runs. These differ more between the schemes than the headline durations suggest.
The renewal condition written down first.
Which facts must hold two or three years out, and what to begin gathering today so that they do. This part decides whether the route was worth taking at all.

FAQ
A document that does not carry a company name. Under a work visa the firm you were admitted for is written into the permission, so walking away from it is an event the permission then has to survive. Here that firm is absent from the start: nobody vouches for the application, nobody is obliged to keep you afterwards, and the opening term is usually longer than a sponsored file would produce.
Not on any of these routes. That is the defining feature rather than a concession, and it is why the assessment is heavier: with nobody vouching for the case, the country tests the applicant directly. The obligation arrives later instead — at the first extension, where most schemes look for either settled work at a dependable wage or a venture running here.
On the opening grant, the Emirates: ten years with automatic renewal, across a published set of categories. Hong Kong's achievement branch comes next, handing over eight years at the first decision, while its other routes open at two or three. Saudi Arabia is not comparable on this axis at all, because its permit comes in two types, one of them without an end date.
Whatever the country in question says counts, and the three lists barely overlap. A tax document proving an income figure. A degree verified by a third-party credential body. A medical certificate and proof of solvency under a statute. A named authority's endorsement of a named category. The common thread is that somebody other than the applicant has to be able to confirm it.
Yes on all three, and the terms differ more than the headline suggests. One links the family's stay to the sponsor's and limits it to a spouse or partner and unmarried children under eighteen. One writes the family into the statute as spouses, children and parents, with rights of their own. One issues permits to spouses and children regardless of age and to parents. Check the definition before promising anybody a move.
