When you need residence and an Emirates ID
Your entry permit is running out
An entry permit buys weeks. The residence file has to close inside them, and the medical test and the biometrics both sit in that window.
You are away more than home
An ordinary residence permit is nullified by itself after 180 continuous days outside the country. The count runs on days, and nobody warns you.
Your card expired with your visa
The Emirates ID ends the day the residence does. Banks, clinics and government portals stop recognising you before anyone explains why.
You are leaving the country for good
Residence has to be cancelled, and only the sponsor can file it. Dependants come off first: the household unwinds in a fixed order.
Your recorded details have changed
A new passport, a new address, a new marital status — each has to reach the authority within a month. A lost card is reported inside 7 days.

What the residence file requires
Residence in the Emirates is two documents issued as one process. The permit records the right to live in the country. The Emirates ID card, issued federally by the authority that keeps the identity register, is how that right works at a bank counter or a hospital desk, and there is no way to hold one document without the other.
Choosing the basis is a separate decision, and the basis is what fixes the term. Where an entity must exist before anyone can be sponsored, start from company registration. Where the route runs on a long-term category, read the Golden Visa.
How long residence lasts
The government portal ties validity to the type and to the sponsor. A dependant is capped by the person sponsoring them, so a household holding three permits still has one expiry date that governs the rest.

What 180 days abroad does
The general rule is blunt: an expatriate resident who lives outside the country for more than 180 continuous days loses the residence automatically, and coming back then needs a new entry permit. The portal publishes the groups the rule does not touch, and the list is specific — investors holding valid residence, students enrolled abroad, residents sent for treatment with a report approved in the country, and several others. Holders of golden and green residence enter directly while their residence is valid.
Getting back in afterwards
A resident who has already crossed the line applies from outside the country, once 180 days have passed, with a reason for the absence and a fine of AED 100 for every 30 days or less spent away. Approval gives 30 days to enter. The portal states that this federal service is not for residents of Dubai.
How the two documents end
Cancellation runs one way only. The sponsor files it, dependants come off before the sponsor, and the Emirates ID is deactivated inside the same request. An employment file adds a step at the labour ministry before the immigration one. Dubai files go to the emirate's directorate, every other emirate to the federal authority.

The basis and the door.

Entry permit or status change.
Someone arriving from abroad comes in on an entry permit; someone already inside changes status without leaving. The two paths differ in documents and in what can go wrong.

Applicants aged 18 and above pass a medical fitness examination, then a security check. Fingerprints and the identity record are taken for the card in the same run.
The permit and the card together.
Residence issuance and the Emirates ID application are processed as linked requests. We answer the authority's queries and keep the passport and sponsor details identical.

Renewal, or a clean exit.
Renewal is filed by the sponsor before expiry. A departure runs the other way — dependants first, then the sponsor, with the card deactivated inside the same request.
