Corporate tax returns in the UAE

Three dates run corporate tax in the Emirates: registration, the return, and deregistration when you close. Each carries its own penalty. We will keep you inside all three.

When you need help with a corporate tax return in the UAE

The first return is coming due

Your first tax period has closed. The return and the payment both land nine months after that date, and the positions inside the first one repeat every year after it.

You registered after the deadline

Registration runs on its own clock, separate from the return. Missing it carries a fixed penalty, and there is a way to have that penalty lifted if the first return goes in early.

The company is being closed

Handing back the licence does not close the tax file. Deregistration is its own application, with its own three-month window and its own monthly penalty.

You are in a free zone

Free zone status does not switch the duty off. Registration and a return are owed either way, and the 0% rate reaches qualifying income only.

A letter came from the authority

A question arrives with a date attached, and what you are able to answer is limited to what your records already show.

What corporate tax support in the UAE covers

In the Emirates the hard part is rarely the rate. It is the calendar: three separate dates, each with its own penalty, and none of them triggered by the others.

The service behind those dates, stripped of any country, lives at corporate tax support. How the rate itself is built, mainland against free zone, is set out in our article on corporate tax for free zone and mainland companies, and our UAE page gathers everything else we do here.

What you get

  • A registration number obtained inside the window your incorporation date sets
  • A return filed and the tax paid within nine months of your year end
  • The first return used to lift a late-registration penalty where the dates allow
  • Deregistration filed within three months of the business ending, final return included
  • Records kept in a shape that survives the seven years the law asks for

Three dates, three clocks

Registration

A company formed in the Emirates applies within three months of incorporation. A foreign company managed from here has three months from its financial year end, and one with a permanent establishment has six months from the day that establishment began.

Return and payment

Both fall due no later than nine months after the end of the tax period, which for most companies is simply the financial year. There is no separate payment date to remember.

Deregistration

Three months from the day the entity ceases to exist, or from dissolution, liquidation or the end of the business. The authority will not deregister a company that still owes a return, tax or a penalty — and the final return covers the period up to the date of cessation.

The price of each missed date

Late registration draws 10,000 dirhams. Late deregistration draws 1,000 dirhams at once and the same amount every month after, up to 10,000. A late return draws 500 dirhams a month for the first twelve months and 1,000 a month from the thirteenth. Tax left unpaid carries 14% a year, charged monthly.

Where the rate is not 9%

Taxable income up to 375,000 dirhams is taxed at 0% and the excess at 9%. A resident company with revenue at or below 3 million dirhams may elect to be treated as having no taxable income at all — an election open to tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2029, and closed to free zone persons and to members of large international groups. Electing does not remove the duty to register or to file.

Stages of work

Reading your tax account — 2–3 working days.

We establish what you are registered for, when your first tax period ended, which returns the authority is already waiting for and whether a penalty is sitting on the account.

Fixing the period the dates hang on.

The tax period is your financial year, and it sets the filing date and the payment date together. Everything else is planned backwards from that one date.

Turning the accounts into taxable income.

Accounting profit is the starting point, not the answer. We work through exempt income, disallowed expenditure and the reliefs you are eligible to elect, and record the reason for each adjustment.

Filing, and paying on the same date.

The return goes in through the authority's portal once you have approved the material positions. The tax is due that same day, so the money and the filing are planned as one step.

Closing the file when the business ends.

Deregistration is filed within three months, after the final return for the period up to cessation and after everything outstanding is settled. A company left registered keeps accruing a monthly penalty.

Holding the evidence for seven years.

Records that support what the return says have to survive seven years after the period they belong to, and be produced in Arabic if the authority asks for them that way.
