IP Asset Transfer from Hong Kong to Hungary
Client
GPS equipment manufacturer

Challenge
A GPS equipment manufacturer needed to relocate its intellectual property portfolio from Hong Kong to Hungary as part of a broader corporate restructuring. The portfolio included trademarks registered across both jurisdictions, each governed by distinct legal frameworks for ownership, recordal, and enforcement. Cross-border IP transfers carry a real risk of protection gaps — a lapse between deregistration in the source jurisdiction and effective recognition in the target one can leave assets exposed. The client needed a transfer mechanism that preserved continuous protection throughout the move, with no windows where rights could be challenged, before committing to the restructuring.
Solution
We delivered an end-to-end IP transfer mechanism built around continuous protection across both jurisdictions:
- Portfolio audit — reviewed the existing IP portfolio, including trademarks held in Hong Kong and Hungary, and mapped registration status, scope, and renewal timelines in each jurisdiction.
- Cross-border framework assessment — analyzed the legal frameworks governing IP assignment, recordal, and recognition in both jurisdictions, identifying procedural gaps that could expose the assets during transition.
- Transfer mechanism design — developed a structured assignment and recordal sequence that kept rights enforceable at every stage, with no interval of unregistered ownership.
- Execution support — prepared the assignment documentation and coordinated filings so the transfer landed as a single, defensible chain of title.
Result
The client secured a clean cross-border transfer of its IP portfolio from Hong Kong to Hungary, with continuous protection preserved across the move.
The structured mechanism we built turned a risk-laden restructuring step into a defensible asset move — with no protection gaps and a clear chain of title supporting the new holding structure.
