When a Bahrain director needs a visa
Two authorities, one person
The labour authority issues permission to work; the residence authority issues permission to live here. A director usually meets both, and they ask for different things.
Your shareholding may sponsor you
Hold enough of the company and you stop needing an employer to sponsor you. Below that level the same person is an ordinary expatriate hire.
Only the basic salary counts
Where a route reads your pay, it reads the basic line alone. Bonuses and allowances are excluded, and a generous package can still sit under the threshold.
The two doors move at different speeds
One authority publishes three working days, the other forty. Booking a start date against the wrong number is how directors end up waiting in another country.
Approval starts a payment clock
On the residence route the invoice has to be settled within thirty days of approval. Miss that window and the application cancels itself.

What Bahrain asks a director
Bahrain has no permit named after the boardroom. What it has is a work permit tied to an occupation, a residence permit a shareholder sponsors for himself, and a long residency for someone who has already spent years on a Bahraini payroll. The three are held by two authorities and priced quite differently.

Three doors, and what each one reads
Work permit from the labour authority
The ordinary route. The company sponsors the permit against a recorded occupation, and a management title carries no separate procedure: a director is processed on the same service as any other expatriate employee.
Self-sponsorship for an investor
The residence authority issues this one on the strength of your holding. The memorandum and commercial register must show a share of no less than BHD 100,000, alongside evidence of stable income from BHD 500 a month.
Long residency for a long server
Open to a professional after five years working in the country on an average monthly basic salary above BHD 2,000, insured with the social insurance organisation on that amount throughout the whole five years.

An administrative fee of BHD 5 sits on top of the work permit, dependants are charged BHD 90, and a transfer of the self-sponsored visa is BHD 250. The advertisement charge applies only where the person is recruited from outside the country.
Speed, and the exemption worth knowing
The labour authority publishes three working days for a permit applied for inside Bahrain and twenty-one working days where the person is still abroad. The residence authority publishes forty working days for investor self-sponsorship, and requires the fee within thirty days of approval or the application is cancelled automatically.
One rule saves a director an entire application. An investor who holds long residency and is one of the partners of the establishment does not have to take out a work permit for it at all. Where a permit does exist and the employer changes, it is cancelled first and a fresh application follows; the two steps are not interchangeable.

Stages of work
Separating the three roles.
Board oversight, day-to-day management, signing authority and shareholding are written down apart from one another. Most wrong filings in Bahrain start with treating those four as one thing called being a director.
Reading the company before the person.
The commercial registration has to be active, the licensed activity has to match the work, and the establishment record with the labour authority has to be in order. A file opened against a company with an unresolved issue stops there.
Testing the shareholding against the threshold.
Where self-sponsorship is the goal, the memorandum and the register are read for the value of your share, and the income evidence is assembled alongside. A nominal holding does not reach this route, and we will say so before you pay anything.
Assembling the evidence each authority names.
Passport validity, conduct certificate, medical insurance issued in the country, the lease with its electricity bill, three months of statements for you and for the company. Each item belongs to a named requirement.
Filing, then watching the clock.
We file through the channel the chosen route uses and track the invoice, because approval on the residence route expires in thirty days if it is not paid. Questions from either authority are answered from the documents already filed.
